| Kitty Cat & Parasailor |
A clear horizon promised another a spectacular sunset so I suggested to the others to come on deck and watch the sun as the day before I had caught the green flash and there seemed do be a good chance of catching this rare phenomenon again. And so it was… As the upper limb of the bright orange ball of fire kissed the horizon, there was an unmistakable green flash, which we all saw very clearly. The most excited was Jean Pierre, who had sailed thousands of miles all over the world and had never experienced “le rayon vert”. He admitted that until now he had been convinced that it was a figment of imagination. No longer.
The main reason why I joined this voyage was the opportunity to experience a long offshore passage on a cruising catamaran. However, as I am always keen to try to kill more that one bird with one stone, I had decided to use this opportunity to test the behavior and performance of a Parasailor on a catamaran. Read more…

| Parasailor spinnaker |
|

We have been sailing with the Parasailor, a revolutionary spinnaker that is becoming quite popular among cruising sailors. We had agreed to test it on this voyage for its efficiency on a catamaran of this size.
Last night the swell got up so skipper Jean Pierre decided to take down the Parasailor, as it was dancing about too much, and use a heavier spinnaker.
For a while everything went well and we were going very fast, averaging 11 to 12 knots. Then the true wind went up to 24 knots, and we started surfing at 14, 15…18 knots…
Suddenly a larger wave knocked Kitty Cat off course and the wind backed the spinnaker which wrapped itself tighter and tighter around the furled up genoa. Read more…

| Jimmy and Ivan Cornell aboard Kitty Cat, a two-year-old Outremer 49 |
Jimmy Cornell reports his trip from St Martin to Miami via Iridium satellite phone.
Happy coincidences have been the story of my life, and this voyage on Kitty Cat is a good example.
It all started at the Paris boat show in early December where I had set up a meeting with Kevin Murphy of Strictly Sail at the Outremer Catamarans booth to talk about my forthcoming series of seminars at the Miami boat show. When Xavier Desmarest, the owner of Outremer, stopped by to say hello to Kevin and heard about my plans, he said, “Jimmy, as you are going to Miami anyway, how would you feel about sailing on one of our cats being delivered from St Martin to Miami for the show?”
So here I am, or more correctly, here we are, son Ivan and I, being part of the delivery crew of Kitty Cat, a two-year-old Outremer 49, normally based on the half-French, half-Dutch Caribbean island of St. Martin. Read more…
